Avon Books - A Brief History

In 1941, the American News Company (ANC) founded avon book June Publications as a paperback book publisher. The company initially focused on comics, but later expanded to other genres, such as romance.

Today, Avon is an imprint of HarperCollins which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary celebration is underway.

Avon Publications

Avon Books was a major rival to the more literary Pocket Book Company in the beginning of the paperback publishing industry. Avon published romances, westerns and mysteries with attractive covers. Their books were cheaper than the more expensive Pocket books, Avon book october and were aimed at housewives, who could read in between cooking and cleaning.

Avon published digest-format papers (the size of magazines for short stories today) in series like Murder Mystery Monthly, Avon Fantasy Reader and many others. These volumes contain a wide range of authors that are prized today by collectors. They include A. Merritt and James M. Cain, as well as H. P. Lovecraft.

Avon sold more than 20 million books each year by the mid-1950s. The 25-cent "G' series included the popular genres such as westerns, whodunits, and boy-meets girl stories. Avon also had 35 cents "T" series that included the standbys of mystery, science fiction and other genres.

The company's emphasis on popularity resulted in them publishing ghost stories, sexually-suggestive love stories and fantasy novels in the early years that were a far cry from the somewhat more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon became part of the Hearst Corporation. The focus shifted to more mainstream literature.

Today, Avon is the world's largest woman-centric beauty and fiction business with representation on five continents and in more than 100 countries. Avon is a top publisher of Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers, focusing on thrillers, crime suspense, general fiction and saga. The company is proud of its female-centric roots and paved the way for female entrepreneurs around the world. It is a global leader in sales, marketing and innovation, making a difference on the world's communities.

Avon Impulse

Founded in 1941, Avon began as an e-book publisher and comic book publisher. The company later turned its attention to romance novels. Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams founded the company. Meyers employed his sisters and brothers as employees. He wanted to create an alternative to Pocket Books. They did so by printing cheaper paperbacks with a mass appeal and luxurious covers.

In the 1970s, Avon was at its peak as a romance publisher. They released Kathleen Woodiwiss's sexy novel, The Flame and the Flower which stayed for 33 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. They also published the sexy novel of Rosemary Rogers, including Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies. This was the first time that an individual novel had topped the charts for this genre.

The company was purchased by Hearst Corporation in 1959. Hearst would put a focus on the romance offerings of the company, causing it to grow into one of the largest publishers of this genre. The company continued to publish inexpensive paperbacks with popular themes like westerns and whodunits. However, the emphasis on romance increased their profitability.

Avon continues to publish romance novels in the present. The company recently launched an imprint on digital media called Avon Impulse, which publishes ebooks and paperbacks. The imprint accepts submissions from amateur writers who aren't represented by an agent. It also lets authors explore their creative potential without having to worry about the publishing industry's reaction.

Avon Impulse offers a 25 percent royalty on the first 10,000 downloads and 50 percent on each subsequent sale. The publisher also edits the work and offers a sexy cover. It is available in ePub and Kindle formats, as well.

Avon and Harper Collins merged in 1999. Avon's non-romance and hardcover paperback lines were moved to the company's sister imprint Morrow and left Avon as a publisher of romance novels. In the end, the publishing house was changed to Avon Books and today is still an important part of the HarperCollins family. Their catalog has expanded to include more than the classic romances, but also includes women's fiction, saga, and an increasing number of thrillers and suspense.
