Changing the Battery in Your Mazda 3 Key Fob

There's nothing more annoying than getting in your vehicle after a long day and discovering that your key fob battery is dead. Fortunately, this is an easy fix with a simple battery replacement from a hardware store or big box retailer.

The addition of a spare key fob to your Mazda 3 can be an inexpensive way to save yourself from having to be taken to the dealer and having them reprogram your keys.

Battery Replacement

You can replace the battery on your Mazda 3 keyfob at home. But, you should only replace the battery when it dies, mazda 6 key fob or if the key fob displays a message in the multi-information display that reads, "Low key fob battery. Replace battery."

You'll need to use a flathead screwdriver and tape and patience to open the case. Find a gap or notch in the bottom part of the metal of your mazda 3 key fob replacement 3's key fob, and then insert the head of the screwdriver into it to cut off the lower portion. Repeat this process for the top metal part however, be careful not to damage the rubber ring at the bottom of the key fob's case.

Pairing Issues

If your key fob stop working all of a sudden, this could indicate that the transmitter inside the car is damaged. This is usually a matter of an expert repair and may require a new key fob.

If you've attempted to replace the battery and reprogram the key fob but it's not working the chip inside the key fob could be faulty. This can happen if your keyfob was dropped or exposed to saltwater or touched by dirty fingers.

To diagnose this issue it is necessary to locate a tiny "key" located in the edge of the fob which allows you to open it and remove the circuit board. You will then be able to examine for any damage or corrosion on the chip. It is recommended to use a clean, dry paper towel to avoid damaging the microchip.

If you're not sure, you can also check the battery connector's terminals for cracks or breaks. If this is the situation, soldering the terminals back into place can usually restore functionality to the key fob. In the same way, you can examine the buttons to see whether they're worn or damaged. If the buttons are loose, they can easily be soldered back in the event that the button is physically snapped off.

Interference Signals

There's nothing more frustrating than trying to get the engine started in your car and seeing the message "No Fob Detected". It can happen at the most unfavorable situations, like the time you're late to work or you're trying to collect your children from daycare/school. There are some things you can do to find out the root of the issue.

Interference signals can cause the remote key fob to cease working in a proper manner. This could be caused by objects like buildings, weather conditions, and transmitters that operate on the same frequency. Interference may also occur if you have an aftermarket device installed in the vehicle that transmits on the same frequency as the key fob.

In addition, if your key fob is exposed to salt or water it may be damaged. Water can penetrate the rubber seals of the electronic chip particularly when the key fob is submerged in water for a prolonged period of time. This can cause the chip to cease working and require replacement of the key fob. If you have a key that has the ability to be programmed and cleaned with isopropyl or electronic cleaners to bring it back to its original functionality. If this doesn't work will be able to fix the issue, then the chip has fried and needs to be replaced.

Locking and Unlocking the Doors

The buttons on the fob's key send electronic signals to the solenoid in the car, which then converts this signal into mechanical action. This locks and unlocks doors. If the door lock is not working, it could be a solenoid malfunction that requires some investigation by a professional auto repair shop.

A dead 12 volt battery can hinder the fob from functioning properly. This could happen if the battery loses its charge or if the contacts become damaged. This problem can be fixed in minutes with a new battery.

The receiver module could be the cause of the issue if the key fob won't work after you replace the battery or reprogram the device. The device receives radio frequency signals from the key fob and interprets them into controlling the vehicle's functions. If it fails it could cost a lot to repair.

To determine if this is the case, start by inserting your spare key into the key slot and setting the ignition to ON. Press the key fob button twice within 10 seconds, without removing it. The Mazda 3 system synchronizes the key to the vehicle and you can use it as your primary remote for driving. This lets you program up three keys.
