Window Sash Repairs

Make sure to check the sashes of your windows regularly for any damage, mildew and mold. You can avoid future repair costs by catching the issues early on before they get out of hand.

The sash is an interior framing that moves vertically upwards or downwards in windows that open. This article will show you how to perform easy repairs to your sash.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window repair sashes can give a classic look to your home. They are also durable and can last many years when they are maintained properly. However, they can become damaged or degraded with time due to exposure or normal wear. Sash repair experts can restore windows to their original condition and maintain their beauty longer than replacement windows.

The first step to sash window repairs is addressing weather stripping, which is found on both the sash as well as the frame. It can cause drafts if damaged or is loose. To fix it, start by finding your window brand and glass manufacturer date (etched in the corner of the glass or on the aluminum spacer between panes). Take the sash off, and mark its width and height so you can purchase replacement weather stripping that matches.

Then, take the sash from its holder and place it on flat surfaces to allow you to access all four sides. If your sash has been double-hung, you must remove the ropes and weights that should be buried within the jamb lining. After you have removed the sash using the utility knife, take off the weather stripping from the old sash by hand or with a putty blade.

Once the sash is clear and clean, you can put in the parting stops. These are long pieces wood that are used to separate the two sashes. Pam prefers to use the standard 1/2-inch by 3/4 inch window trimmings from the lumberyard. However, you could substitute for a scrap piece of lumber.

After removing the stopper and cutting it to length after which, apply a thin layer of glazing compound to the bottom of the sash. Smooth the compound with your putty knife and let it dry for at least a few days. When it's completely dried and dried, apply a second coat of acrylic latex paint. This will protect the putty, and give your sash a fresh appearance.

Sash Hardware

It is important to have the tools needed before you start. Begin by marking the position of the hinge channel on the frame with a pencil (Photo 1). Then, remove the sash and take off the hardware including the parting beads (Photo 2) and the chains or cords that secure it. A hot gun with nozzle shield and a medium setting can soften any putty that has been hardened. Remove the old sash, and store it in an bag with a label.

Sash Weights

Sash weights can be replaced to improve the operation of your window sash and decrease the cost of energy. Sash weights are hefty lead or iron cylinders, which are enclosed inside a hidden compartment and connected to the movable window sash using a rope. These weights function as counterbalances, allowing you to open and shut the window without having to use mechanical or electrical devices. The sash-weights are typically disregarded or disabled by homeowners and then turned into scrap when they break; therefore, you may need to search for replacements.
